กิจกรรมทั้งหมดเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการ AITC เรื่อง “Empowering Communities for Inclusive Development through SEP for SDGs: Lessons from Community-Based Participatory Research and Community-Driven Development in Thai Isan Villages” ดำเนินการโดย ดร.

On 9 May 2026, a group of 28 participants from 17 countries, namely Armenia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Samoa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic, examined the relationship between local communities and Buddhist temples in relation to socio-economic development through a marigold-dyed textile initiative at Ban Khok Sawang Phatthana Learning Centre. The centre functions as a community-based hub for marigold product innovation and local enterprise development, established through collaboration between local residents and Nakhon Phanom University.

The initiative demonstrates how ritual objects and sacred offerings can be transformed into resources for sustainable development. Local communities surrounding Wat Phra That Phanom have repurposed marigold flowers used in religious worship into textiles and community products, thereby reducing floral waste. This is particularly significant during the annual nine-day temple festival, when more than three million marigold flowers are typically left unused after religious ceremonies.

The delegation subsequently travelled to Ubon Ratchathani Province to explore cultural conservation and promotion at Khemarat Walking Street (Khemmarat Cultural Street), a district-led initiative aimed at promoting tourism while preserving cultural heritage and the traditional riverine livelihoods of communities along the Mekong on the Thailand–Lao PDR border.

The site is also located near the proposed Sixth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge project, which will connect Na Tan District in Ubon Ratchathani with Lakhonepheng in Salavan Province, Lao PDR, reflecting broader geopolitical and infrastructural connectivity within the Mekong sub-region.

These activities form part of the Annual International Training Course (AITC) entitled “Empowering Communities for Inclusive Development through SEP for SDGs: Lessons from Community-Based Participatory Research and Community-Driven Development in Thai Isan Villages”, led by Dr Titipol Phakdeewanich, Project Director, together with academic staff from Faculty of Political Science, Ubon Ratchathani University. The programme is supported by the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and is held from 1–15 May 2026.
