[English below]
Love for Humanity by Siriraj
Sharing the Cooperative Education Experience in India and Sri Lanka by Ms Ruenjai Yaisompong, a fourth-year student from the Department of Politics and International Relations
“Being given the opportunity to undertake an internship at the Royal Thai Embassies abroad was a significant step for me. It not only allowed me to learn about governmental work at the state level, but also broadened my perspective on the South Asian region.
My internship took place at the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi, India.
This experience enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of bilateral relations in multiple dimensions, including politics, economy, and tourism, through which Thailand maintains close cooperation with both Sri Lanka and India. It also provided insights into Thailand’s interactions within the ASEAN framework. Observing the real working processes of diplomats in advancing policy and coordinating mutual interests between countries helped me better appreciate the complex nature of international relations.
One particularly interesting and new experience was to witness how international relations can be conducted through “medical diplomacy”, such as the Love for Humanity by the Siriraj Hospital project. This form of diplomacy goes beyond conventional diplomatic practice and demonstrates how international relations can be fostered through humanitarian assistance and the exchange of knowledge in public health. In addition, religious connections can also serve as another channel of diplomacy.
Beyond the practical work experience, I also had the opportunity to develop my writing skills, which are central to diplomatic work. This included organising sensitive information, writing articles and communications, and coordinating with various parties. These are essential professional skills in the field of diplomacy, and they were continuously strengthened throughout the internship period.
Apart from the internship itself, the experience also allowed me to travel independently and gain new perspectives abroad. I was able to visit important cultural heritage sites and architectural landmarks that have been remarkably well preserved, such as Galle Fort in Sri Lanka and Humayun’s Tomb in India, the latter of which inspired the construction of the Taj Mahal.
This cooperative education experience therefore went far beyond a typical internship. It became a journey of self-exploration, an opportunity to open up myself to a wider world beyond Thailand, and a chance to practise professional skills in a real working environment in preparation for a future career at the national level.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Assistant Professor Patawee Chotanan, Assistant Professor Dr Piyanat Soikham, and Dr Prateuang Muang-on for their guidance, advice, and support throughout my cooperative education experience in Sri Lanka and India.”
