Ubon Ratchathani University Faculty of Political Science Promotes Global Academic Synergy through International Seminar at Kyoto University, Japan

.

Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to advancing academic excellence and fostering international collaboration, the Faculty of Political Science, Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU), recently participated in an international seminar titled "State, Society, and Political Change in Contemporary Thailand."

.

The delegation was led by Dr. Siriporn Jantanasakulwong, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science, accompanied by faculty members from the Department of Politics and International Relations.

The seminar was co-hosted and warmly received by two world-renowned research institutions at Kyoto University: the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies (ASAFAS).

The event served as a high-level academic platform for rigorous discourse on the shifting dynamics of Thai politics, society, and critical geopolitics.

Three distinguished political scientists from Ubon Ratchathani University presented their latest empirical research and fieldwork insights on topics currently commanding global scholarly attention:

.

1. Dr. Titipol Phakdeewanich presented on "The consolidation of Thai conservative forces through established patronage networks in the Isan provinces during the 2026 Thai election." His presentation examined the mobilization of traditional patronage networks in the northeastern region (Isan) and how they function to solidify conservative political power.

.

2. Assistant Professor Dr. Thanachate Wisaijorn, Acting Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations, delivered a lecture titled "Escaping the Temporal Traps: Navigating Kairos and Chronos during the Thai-Cambodian Military Clashes of 2025." His talk offered a critical re-evaluation of borderland conflicts by applying temporal philosophical frameworks to the 2025 military clashes.

3. Assistant Professor Patawee Chotanan, Chair of the Local Studies Research Group, presented "The Rise of the Bhumjaithai Party in Northeast Thailand (Isan): Evidence from the 8 February 2026 Election." His analysis provided empirical insights into local political dynasties, decentralisation, and changing voting behaviours in the latest general election.

.

The presentations stimulated engaging academic exchanges and Q&A sessions with Kyoto University’s prominent scholars. Notable attendees included Prof. Kobayashi Satoru (Vice Director of CSEAS), Prof. Pavin Chachavalpongpun, Associate Prof. Mario Lopez, and Dr. Kazuya Nakamizo (Dean of ASAFAS) Associate Professor Dr Prajak Kongkeerati and Associate Professor Dr Decha Tangseefa.

.

Dr. Siriporn Jantanasakulwong emphasised the strategic importance of this visit, stating, "This international seminar not only showcases the high caliber of our faculty's research on the global stage but also marks a pivotal step in strengthening our institutional ties with Kyoto University. We look forward to deeper research collaborations and sustainable academic exchanges between Thailand and Japan in the years to come."

.

The seminar took place on 26 May 2026, at the CSEAS Medium-Sized Conference Room, Kyoto University.
