On 27 May 2025, a delegation from the Faculty of Political Science, Ubon Ratchathani University, led by the Dean, Dr Siriporn Jantanasakulwong, paid a study visit to the Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. This SEZ is the first of its kind in the country, established on 29 September 2003 and now marking its 22nd year of operation.

Strategically located along the Asian Highway No. 9 and situated within the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), the Savan-Seno SEZ plays a pivotal role in connecting Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, and Vietnam, with potential for further integration with China. The zone enhances Laos' positioning as a production base for developing economies and serves as a key hub for cross-border trade and investment.

The visit included a tour of Zone C, “Savan Park”, a commercial, industrial, and logistics hub founded in 2008. Covering 234 hectares within the Municipality of Kaysone Phomvihane along Asian Highway No. 9, Savan Park serves as the core area for trade, industry, and logistics, including food distribution and land transport.

Currently, 76 companies are operating in Zone C. Thai companies make up the largest group with 15 firms, followed by Laos (12), Japan (6), and China (6). Notable examples include:

- Urai Paint Lao Co., Ltd. – a Thai-owned company specialising in house paint and coatings;

- Time Square Property Development Co., Ltd. – a Chinese firm focused on real estate and warehouse rentals;

- Aeroworks Co., Ltd. – a Dutch company producing aircraft interior components;

- Celestica Lao Co., Ltd. – a Canadian firm manufacturing telecommunications and computer parts.

The first land port in the area was inaugurated in 2015, and on 13 December 2018, the Lao government officially integrated the Savan-Seno SEZ with Ban Dan Savanh border trade area, designating it collectively as the Savannakhet Special Economic Zone. Today, the zone records an average annual import volume of USD 204 million and an export volume of USD 246 million, underscoring its economic significance.

This field visit offered faculty members valuable insights into regional economic development, trade connectivity, and investment dynamics in the Mekong subregion. The Faculty of Political Science remains committed to promoting international engagement and fostering practical understanding of key economic zones in the ASEAN context.
