The academic seminar, held under the theme “70 Years of Friendship: Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Future of Thailand–Sri Lanka Relations” at Siam Nivasa, was graced by the presence of Ms. Sashikala Premawardhane, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, and Mr. Paitoon Mahapannaporn, Ambassador of Thailand to Colombo, who delivered the opening remarks. Scholars, diplomats, and international relations experts from both countries joined to exchange views on three key issues: historical and cultural ties, expanding bilateral cooperation for development, and opportunities for regional and international collaboration amidst changing geopolitics. On this occasion, Asst. Prof. Dr. Piyanat Soikham was invited to deliver a lecture on the topic “From Ancient Bonds to Future Journeys: Thailand’s Story of Friendship with Sri Lanka.”
In addition, visits were made to leading Sri Lankan academic institutions, including the University of Colombo and the University of Kelaniya. Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, welcomed the delegation. Discussions were held with administrators and faculty members from the international relations departments of both universities, focusing particularly on academic collaboration in student and staff exchanges and joint research on South Asia–Southeast Asia linkages.
Participation in these activities represented an important opportunity for Ubon Ratchathani University to strengthen future academic and cultural cooperation between Thailand and Sri Lanka. It also highlighted the University’s role as an academic hub connecting Thailand with South Asia and the Indian Ocean region, in line with the upcoming launch of the Bachelor of Political Science in International Relations programme in the academic year 2026.
